Denise Rolark Barnes

Publisher | The Washington Informer

Denise Rolark Barnes is the publisher of The Washington Informer, a leading weekly newspaper serving the African American community in the Washington, D.C. area. She took over the role from her father, Dr. Calvin W. Rolark, who founded the paper in 1964. Under her leadership, The Washington Informer has grown to include an online publication, a weekly e-newsletter, and a strong social media presence. She oversees a team of nearly 25 staff members and has expanded the paper to include special editions on various important topics. Denise also launched WI Bridge, a publication for millennials and Gen Z, with her son. She leads The Washington Informer Charities, supporting literacy programs, internships, and scholarships. Denise is an active community servant, involved in numerous initiatives and organizations. She holds a BA in journalism and a JD from Howard University. She lives in D.C. with her husband and has two adult sons.
